You are moved through range you cannot reach on your own, with the joint supported so nothing has to brace. That support is the entire difference between this and stretching by yourself. Sessions at Fit Body Therapy in Los Altos are one-on-one with Angelo dela Cruz, practicing since 1996.
Why Stretching Yourself Has a Ceiling
When you stretch on your own, you have to stabilise the position at the same time. That means the muscles around the joint are working while you are asking a muscle to lengthen — and the nervous system reads active load near end range as a reason to protect.
The result is a stretch that stops at the point where guarding begins, which is often well short of the tissue’s actual available range. You feel the pull, so it seems like it is working. What you are mostly feeling is the brake.
Take the stabilising job away and the threshold moves. That is the mechanism.
What Actually Happens
The limb is supported and taken through range slowly, with the end position held or moved rhythmically depending on what the tissue is doing. Where useful, this includes muscle energy technique — you contract gently against resistance, then relax, and the range that becomes available afterward is greater than it was before.
None of it is forced. Pushing past guarding produces the same protective response as stretching into it yourself, with more leverage behind it.
It is also not usually a standalone session. Restriction that comes from fascial densification or joint mechanics does not resolve through range work alone — the stretching extends what manual treatment has already opened.
Range You Keep vs Range You Borrow
A stretch produces range immediately. Whether you still have it next week is a different question, and the answer depends on whether you use it.
Range the nervous system does not consider controllable tends to get taken back. Which is why every session ends with something to do — usually a movement that loads the new range lightly, a few minutes a day. That is the part that converts borrowed range into range you own.
Who Books This
- People whose flexibility has plateaued despite stretching consistently
- Hips, hamstrings and thoracic spine — the regions most limited by desk time
- Anyone who finds solo stretching uncomfortable enough to skip it
- Adults noticing range slipping year over year and wanting to hold the line
- Return to activity after injury, where guarding outlasted the injury itself
Frequently Asked Questions
Is this the same as a stretching franchise session?
The technique overlaps. The difference is that this follows an assessment and sits inside orthopedic treatment, so the stretching targets what was found rather than running a standard sequence.
Should it hurt?
No. You should feel lengthening, not a fight. If you are bracing, the range gained will not hold.
Will this replace my own stretching?
The opposite — it makes your own work more productive by opening range you then reinforce. The home plan is what keeps it.
Do I book it separately?
No. You book a session, and how much stretching it includes depends on what the assessment finds.
